How Much Flooring Do I Need? A Homeowner's Guide

How Much Flooring Do I Need? A Homeowner's Guide

One of the first questions we hear from homeowners is, "How much flooring do I need?"

The good news is you don't need a blueprint or a degree in math to get started. A tape measure and a few basic measurements are usually enough to begin planning your project.

Start with the Basics

For most rooms, simply measure the length and width.

Multiply those numbers together to find your square footage.

Example:

12' × 15' = 180 square feet

If your room isn't a perfect rectangle, don't panic. Just break it into smaller sections, measure each area, and add them together.

Don't Forget the Little Spaces

Hallways, closets, pantries, and laundry rooms are easy to overlook, but they add up quickly.

If you plan to run the same flooring into those spaces, make sure to include them in your measurements.

Always Order Extra

One of the biggest mistakes we see is homeowners ordering the exact square footage they measured.

Every project needs some extra material for cuts, waste, and future repairs.

As a general rule:

  • Tile: Add 10-15%
  • Hardwood and LVP: Add 5-10%
  • Complex patterns: Plan for a little more

Trust us, having a few extra boxes tucked away is much better than trying to track down discontinued material years later.

Measure Walls Too

Planning a backsplash or tiled shower?

Measure the height and width of each wall and multiply those numbers together.

Those measurements will help determine how much tile you'll need and make planning accent walls or niches much easier.

Pictures Help More Than You Think

Measurements are great, but pictures are even better.

If you're visiting the showroom, bring a few photos of your space. Seeing cabinets, paint colors, and lighting helps us make recommendations that fit your home and your style.

Don't Stress About Getting It Perfect

Most people don't measure rooms every day, and that's okay.

Even rough measurements are enough to get the conversation started. We can help fine-tune quantities and guide you through the rest.

Final Thoughts

Getting started doesn't have to be overwhelming.

A few measurements and some pictures are often all you need to start exploring options and putting together a plan.

And if you're unsure, that's what we're here for.

Helping homeowners bring their ideas to life is one of our favorite parts of the job. Sometimes, it all starts with a tape measure and a vision for what your home could become.
